Online Safety

Online Safety

At our school, we teach children how to use technology safely, responsibly and confidently. As children spend more time online for learning, communication and entertainment, it is important that they understand how to stay safe and make good choices in the digital world.

Year 3

In Year 3, children begin to develop their understanding of online safety and learn what it means to stay safe when using the internet. They explore how being safe online is similar to staying safe in the real world and learn simple rules for navigating the internet responsibly.

Children discuss different ways people communicate online and consider the benefits and potential risks of these communication methods. They learn the importance of keeping personal information private and understand why they should never share personal details without permission. Pupils also explore online gaming and apps, recognising potential dangers and learning practical strategies to stay safe while having fun online.

Year 4

In Year 4, children build on their knowledge by learning about cyberbullying. They learn how to recognise online bullying, understand its impact, and know what to do if they experience or witness it.

Pupils also explore a range of situations they may encounter online and discuss safe and sensible ways to respond. Through these lessons, children develop a greater understanding of how to be responsible digital citizens and learn the key dos and don'ts of online behaviour.

Years 5 and 6

In Years 5 and 6, children develop a deeper understanding of online relationships and communication. They learn that people online may not always be who they claim to be and explore ways to chat safely and securely.

Children also consider the importance of balancing screen time with other activities. They learn to recognise signs of excessive screen use and understand how too much time online can affect wellbeing. Pupils explore online privacy, digital footprints and reputation management, helping them make informed decisions about what they share online and how their actions can have lasting effects.

Supporting Children to Stay Safe Online

Our online safety curriculum helps children develop the knowledge and skills they need to enjoy the benefits of technology while staying safe, respectful and responsible online. We encourage parents and carers to talk regularly with their children about their online experiences and work alongside us to promote safe digital habits.
