History
Curriculum Lead: Sophie Hopkins
At Parkway Academy, we believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to explore and understand the significant events that have shaped the world we live in today. Through the study of history, pupils develop an understanding of cause and consequence, enabling them to make meaningful connections between past events and the lives of people today. By examining the actions and experiences of individuals and societies throughout history, learners gain a deeper appreciation of how the past continues to influence the present.
Wherever possible, history is taught through links to the local area, helping pupils recognise how global and national events have impacted the communities in which they live. Our curriculum encourages curiosity about key historical concepts such as civilisation, empire, migration and change over time. Through the exploration of a wide range of historical sources and evidence, pupils learn how our understanding of the past is constructed and why it is important to consider different perspectives when interpreting historical events.
A strong understanding of chronology is at the heart of our history curriculum. Pupils study a broad range of historical periods and develop an awareness that different civilisations and events often existed and unfolded simultaneously. By building this chronological knowledge, pupils are able to place historical events within a wider context and develop a coherent understanding of the past.
