Religious Education
Curriculum Lead: Sophie Hopkins
Intent
At Parkway Academy, our Religious Education curriculum aims to develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of a range of world religions, beliefs and world views, whilst promoting respect, tolerance and appreciation of diversity. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, pupils develop an understanding of how religious beliefs influence the lives, values and traditions of individuals and communities locally, nationally and globally.
We intend for pupils to become inquisitive learners who ask thoughtful questions, reflect on their own beliefs and values, and develop the skills needed to engage respectfully in discussions about religion, spirituality and morality. Through RE, pupils gain the knowledge and cultural understanding necessary to thrive in modern Britain and contribute positively to an increasingly diverse society.
Implementation
The RE curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure pupils build their knowledge progressively throughout their time at Parkway Academy. Learning is organised around key concepts, beliefs, practices and themes within different faiths and world views, enabling children to make connections between religions and understand both similarities and differences.
Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, enquiry, reflection and debate. Pupils explore religious texts, stories, artefacts, celebrations and places of worship, developing their understanding through first-hand experiences where possible, including visits and visitors. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support pupils in developing confidence when discussing religious and philosophical concepts.
Teachers adapt learning appropriately to ensure all pupils can access the curriculum and make progress. Regular opportunities for retrieval practice help pupils retain and apply their knowledge over time.
Impact
The impact of our RE curriculum is evident in pupils who demonstrate respect, curiosity and understanding when discussing different faiths, beliefs and world views. Children develop a secure body of knowledge that enables them to explain religious beliefs and practices, make links between different religions and reflect thoughtfully on their own ideas and experiences.
Pupils leave Parkway Academy with a greater understanding of the diverse world around them and an appreciation of the values that underpin different communities. Through RE, children become respectful, reflective and informed citizens who are well-prepared for life in modern Britain and beyond.
